Hiking Basics
Equipment:
Good hiking boots, discover pass, emergency backpack (2-day), camera/phone, GPS/compass, appropriate clothing, sun glasses, flashlight/headlamp, knife, maps, reference books for foraging, birds, tracking, wildflowers, first aid kit, snacks & water
Licenses:
None needed on public property-Permission needed on private
When:
Open all year-some groups change from hiking shoes to snowshoes when appropriate.
Where:
Look for established trails that have parking available near trailhead. Research your trail by length, elevation gain, difficulty. Internet or hiking books will guide you. Your neighborhood might offer interesting sights and be able to be used more frequently.
Reminders:
Tell someone when/where you are going and expect to return, consider leaving note with vehicle, take emergency backpack, take someone with you.
Hiking Buddies:
Check the internet and you will be surprised how many people are looking for companions to hike. Many choose close in hikes, some even take the bus to start.
Benefits:
Virtually all doctors recommend hiking as a great way to stay fit.
